Unlike previous Roland instruments, the G-70 and E-80 no longer has a fixed area where it
stores User Program settings, so that the number of User Programs is, in fact, unlimited.
User Programs can reside in the internal memory or on a memory card. You can even load
them individually using the User Program Finder. To keep this massive amount of
information manageable, the G-70 / E-80 works with User Program Set Lists (hence the
[SETLIST / LIST] button). Such lists are what their name suggests: Enumerations of User
Program files stored in the same memory area as the list file itself.
Set Lists are references to User Programs. They do not contain those registrations. The
advantage of User Program Set Lists is that loading a completely different set of
registrations takes less than a second (loading User Program Sets on an older Roland
arranger instrument took much longer). This allows to prepare different sets of User
Programs for events, etc., that may access the same User Program data here and there. If
you change a User Program (e.g. by selecting another sound for the LW2 part), that change
is automatically adopted by all Set Lists that refer to that User Program.
Q: Can I playback a UPG file on my computer?
A: No, that is not possible. However, you can edit UPG files with e.g. the Roland Database
Manager or the Session Manager.
Q: Can I share UPG files with my friends?
A: Yes, that is possible. But please notice that any UPG file has a pointer to a specific style,
which is linked to the UPG file. If you share a UPG file with a friend, then your friend should
also have the linked file present in his/her keyboard. This is not a problem, when you only
use the internal ROM styles, but if your UPG links to a non ROM styles, then it suddenly
becomes important that your friend has the style used in the UPG. And furthermore you
should notice that it is not only needed to have the style present in your keyboard as the
UPG file also has a pointer to the memory source of the style. Let's say that you have
created a UPG which links to a style present on your external memory card. You now want
to share this UPG with your friend. You are a wise man, so you send your friend the UPG
file and the style (.STL file) used in the UPG. BUT now it is important that your friend saves
the style file on his external memory card. Otherwise the keyboard will present the user
with a "File not found" error.
Q: Can the E-80 read a UPG from the G-70?
A: Yes, in general it is possible to read UPG files across models (E-50, E-60, E-80 and G-70).
However, the best result will always be exchanging UPG files between keyboards of the
same model. The E-80 has e.g. more effect settings than the G-70. These settings are saved
in the UPG and these settings are of no use when the UPG is loading into the G-70.
